Cloud Operations and Governance for an Energy Intelligence Platform
Ficode’s contribution covered AWS cloud operations governance and knowledge transfer for the platform. The purpose was to help teams manage its interconnected layers with a clearer operating model.
The project in context
The client operated an energy intelligence platform for large commercial buildings. It brought together live building telemetry, services on Amazon EKS, release pipelines and integrations with equipment and external systems. Those components also created operational responsibilities that extended beyond initial delivery. Ficode’s contribution covered AWS cloud operations governance and knowledge transfer for the platform.
Many platform layers. Shared dependencies. Operational knowledge to pass on.
The energy platform combined a Kubernetes runtime, telemetry processing, deployment pipelines and building-system connections. Each layer had different failure modes and support requirements. The challenge was to make the overall service easier for an operating team to understand and manage, rather than leaving important decisions and knowledge with individual engineers.
The challenge Before
Multiple layers
Runtime, data flow and integrations depend on each otherSupport decisions
Ownership and response need clear directionKnowledge gaps
Platform expertise must reach operatorsWith Ficode Connected Approach
Shared platform view
Understand dependencies across servicesGovernance focus
Address ownership and change practicesKnowledge transfer
Bring platform context to the support teamBring operational responsibilities into view
Understand
Bring the data path, Amazon EKS runtime, release process and building-system integrations into a shared operating picture.
Govern
Consider where operational ownership, change decisions and escalation responsibilities need to sit.
Prepare
Examine the operational questions around service health, incident response and recovery across the platform.
Transfer
Knowledge transfer formed part of Ficode’s role. Ficode ensured a smooth handover by explaining the platform architecture and key operational dependencies.
From a multi-layer platform to an operating model
Platform layers
Runtime, releases and data integrationsOperating concerns
Ownership, monitoring and recoveryKnowledge transfer
Context shared with the operating teamA clearer basis for day-to-day platform operations
Cross-platform understanding
The operating team needs to understand how the runtime, event processing, release workflow and building integrations affect one another when diagnosing incidents or reviewing changes.
Operational accountability
Governance work provides a basis for clarifying support ownership, change decisions and escalation routes.
Monitoring and recovery planning
Reliable operation calls for agreed health checks, incident responses and recovery expectations.
Knowledge continuity
Knowledge transfer is intended to reduce reliance on individual contributors by sharing the platform context with the operating team.
Confirmed technology and implementation scope
AWS platform; Amazon EKS, telemetry processing, Jenkins release workflows and building-system interfaces. Engagement scope: governance and knowledge transfer.
