Smart Building Systems Integration for Energy Management and Automation

Ficode built the AWS-based integration layer using interfaces including BACnet controllers and MQTT devices. Alongside reading data and system states, supported connections allow the platform to issue authorised commands and check the value or state the equipment reports afterwards.

The project in context

In large commercial buildings, energy meters, HVAC equipment, lighting and management networks often use different interfaces. The client operated an energy intelligence platform that needed to bring these systems together for monitoring, analysis and configured actions. The integration work also covered third-party APIs, tenant systems, document storage and notification services.

Different building systems. Restricted commands. Results that need checking.

The client needed one platform to handle readings from equipment with different protocols, data formats and permissions. Reading telemetry was only part of the work. For systems that permit it, the platform also needed a controlled route for operator-initiated or rule-driven commands, followed by a check of the reported result.

The challenge Before

Different interfaces

Building systems expose different protocols

Command restrictions

Not every system permits a write action

Uncertain response

A command alone does not confirm the reported state

With Ficode Connected Approach

Connect sources

Map supported systems into the platform

Authorised actions

Use permitted commands and configured rules

Check read-back

Compare reported states after a command

Connect the interfaces. Apply the rules. Check the response.

01

Connect

Ficode established integration paths for BACnet controllers, MQTT devices and third-party APIs, alongside relevant tenant, document and notification services.

02

Evaluate

Processed readings can be checked against rules, schedules, thresholds and sensor values set by engineers.

03

Act

Supported integrations allow authorised setpoint changes, on/off actions, connected-system alarms and email notifications.

04

Verify

After a command, the platform reads the relevant reported value or state back and checks it against the requested action.

From building-system readings to a checked response

Connected systems

BACnet, MQTT and supported APIs

Integration and rules

Map data and evaluate conditions

Supported commands

Operator or rule-triggered actions

CONNECTED OUTCOME

Read-back and configured follow-up. Check the equipment’s reported value or state; apply the configured action when an anomaly resolves or persists.

A platform that can monitor, respond and check

Connected building information

BACnet, MQTT and other supported interfaces bring readings and states from different systems into the energy platform.

Configured operating responses

Engineer-defined conditions and operator instructions can trigger supported actions such as setpoint changes, equipment switching, alarms and email notifications.

Read-back after commands

Following a supported command, the system reads the reported value or state back so the platform can check whether it matches the requested action.

Respect for system boundaries

Write access depends on each integration’s capabilities and permissions. Fire alarm and other life-safety interfaces remain subject to documented safety and operational restrictions.

Confirmed technology and implementation scope

AWS integration layer; BACnet, MQTT and third-party APIs; tenant systems, document storage and notifications.
