Stabilising Hybrid Linux and Windows Workloads on Amazon EKS

Kubernetes scheduling failures and Windows-container deployment issues were getting in the way of placing services on Amazon EKS. Ficode investigated the constraints, corrected the relevant workload configuration and checked that the deployments could run.

The project in context

The client’s energy intelligence platform brings together information from commercial building systems. Some services use Linux containers; others need Windows. Kubernetes scheduling failures and Windows-container deployment issues were getting in the way of placing these services on Amazon EKS.

Mixed operating systems. Unmatched nodes. Stalled deployments.

The platform needed to run Linux and Windows containers within its Kubernetes environment. These workloads cannot be placed on interchangeable worker nodes: each needs a compatible operating system, while other scheduling settings can further limit placement.

The challenge Before

Mixed workloads

Linux and Windows containers need different nodes

Scheduling mismatch

Workload constraints do not align with available placement

Deployment problems

Some workloads cannot schedule or deploy as intended

With Ficode Connected Approach

Review requirements

Check operating systems and scheduling constraints

Correct configuration

Align workloads with compatible execution environments

Validate deployments

Confirm corrected workloads deploy on Amazon EKS

Find the constraint. Correct the placement. Check the deployment.

01

Review

Examined the scheduling failures and Kubernetes feedback to understand which workloads were not being placed.

02

Match

Compared operating-system requirements and other placement constraints with the execution environments available.

03

Correct

Corrected the workload and deployment configuration so Linux and Windows containers could target compatible nodes.

04

Validate

Deployed and checked the corrected workloads on Amazon EKS.

From workload requirements to compatible Kubernetes nodes

Platform workloads

Linux or Windows containers with defined runtime needs

Kubernetes scheduling

Amazon EKS matches placement constraints to nodes

Compatible worker nodes

Linux workloads on Linux nodes; Windows containers on Windows nodes

CONNECTED OUTCOME

Scheduling failures and Windows-container deployment problems were addressed, and the corrected workloads were deployed and checked on Amazon EKS.

A more dependable runtime for mixed workloads

Linux and Windows support

Both operating-system workload types can be directed towards the compatible worker nodes they require.

Scheduling problems addressed

Corrected settings resolve the reported mismatch between workload requirements and placement conditions.

Deployment path checked

The adjusted workloads were deployed and checked on Amazon EKS rather than treated as a configuration-only fix.

Platform services supported

A functioning application runtime supports the wider building-energy platform and its data-processing services.

Confirmed technology and implementation scope

Amazon EKS (managed Kubernetes control plane and runtime); Linux containers; Windows containers.

Are mixed workloads failing to schedule or deploy?

Ficode can review Kubernetes scheduling behaviour, workload settings and deployment configuration to help identify placement problems in mixed Linux and Windows environments.
