VETERINARY HEALTHCARE / AWS ROUTING

Global Traffic Management for a Multi-Region AWS Platform

Ficode designed stable global entry through Route 53 and Global Accelerator, with regional endpoint groups for a European production region and an APAC warm standby.

The project in context

Ficode separated a stable DNS name from the choice of which region serves application traffic. Route 53 records point users to Global Accelerator, which directs traffic through endpoint groups towards the regional load-balancer and ECS application paths. Traffic dials are used by the configured disaster-recovery workflow to change regional routing.

Recovery needed a controlled regional switch without changing the user-facing DNS entry.

The architecture required a consistent global entry, two distinct regional application paths and a clear mechanism to send traffic to the warm standby only when the recovery workflow called for it.

The challenge Before

Global access

Stable name needed by users

Regional separation

Primary and prepared standby

Failover complexity

Switching regions without DNS edits

With Ficode Connected Approach

Route 53 DNS

Name points to Global Accelerator

Endpoint groups

Europe primary and APAC standby

Traffic dials

Controlled regional traffic switch

Keep DNS entry stable while controlling regional delivery

01

Configure the entry

Use Amazon Route 53 DNS to direct users to AWS Global Accelerator.

02

Define regional groups

Configure endpoint groups for European active production and the APAC warm standby.

03

Connect application paths

Route each group towards load-balancer target groups and Amazon ECS services.

04

Integrate recovery switching

Use Global Accelerator traffic-dial changes after the recovery workflow validates standby readiness.

CONNECTED OUTCOME

Regional traffic can be directed through Global Accelerator without updating DNS records during recovery.

Global routing designed for an active-passive recovery model

Consistent entry

One stable user-facing global traffic entry model.

Distinct regions

European active production and APAC standby have separate endpoint groups.

Controlled switching

Recovery workflow uses traffic dials rather than DNS changes.

Regional application paths

Each region connects to load-balancer targets and ECS services.

Confirmed technology and implementation scope
