How Ficode Connected an Educational Platform to Moodle Through LTI 1.3

Ficode integrated an educational platform with the client’s existing Moodle LMS using LTI 1.3. Students access activities through Moodle, with automatic user provisioning, course and role context, deep linking and grade passback where applicable.

The project in context

The client relied heavily on Moodle and wanted to make another educational platform available through it. Ficode made that platform compatible with LTI 1.3 and connected it to the existing LMS. Students can launch activities from Moodle with automatic user provisioning and course and role context.

Connecting separate systems around the existing learning workflow

The educational platform operated separately from Moodle, with its own student access. The client wanted to bring its functionality into the LMS already used for courses and students. The integration needed to handle platform access, user provisioning and course context, alongside content links and the return of applicable grades.

The challenge Before

Separate student access

Students needed separate access to a platform outside Moodle courses.

Course and role context

Platform access needed context from the student’s Moodle learning environment.

Content and results

Platform content and applicable grades needed connections to Moodle courses.

With Ficode Connected Approach

Launch from Moodle

Students launch platform activities from Moodle without separate local logins.

Provisioning with context

Automatic provisioning carries the course and role context from Moodle.

Linked content and grades

Deep linking connects content; applicable grades return to Moodle automatically.

Implementing the launch and information flows between both systems

01

Enable the Moodle launch

Implement LTI 1.3 compatibility so students can open the educational platform through their Moodle environment.

02

Provision users with context

Support automatic user provisioning and carry the course and role information associated with each launch.

03

Connect learning content

Implement deep linking so platform content can be reached through links within the learning environment.

04

Return applicable grades

Implement grade passback to return applicable activity results to the grade book within the Moodle LMS.

From a Moodle course to the learning activity

Start in Moodle

Open the relevant Moodle course or learning activity.

Launch the platform

Use the LMS-mediated launch through LTI 1.3 integration.

Provision and access

Provision the user with course and role context and access platform activities.

CONNECTED OUTCOME

A student opens a course or activity in Moodle and launches the connected platform through LTI 1.3. The platform provisions the user automatically and receives course and role context.

A connected platform within the client’s Moodle workflow

Access through Moodle

Students can launch platform activities from Moodle without needing a separate local student login.

Automatic user provisioning

The integration provisions users automatically with the course and role context supplied by Moodle.

Content links within the LMS

Deep linking makes platform content reachable from the learning environment the client already uses.

Applicable grades returned

Grade passback returns applicable activity results to Moodle for inclusion in its existing grade book.

The client’s educational platform became accessible through the Moodle environment already in use.

Technology and implementation

Moodle LMS (LTI platform) and the connected educational application (LTI tool). Integration supports automatic provisioning, course and role context, deep linking and grade passback.
