How Ficode Developed 45 Interactive Mathematics Tools for K–12 Lessons
Ficode developed and maintained 45 interactive mathematics tools for a major US educational publisher. Embedded within its K–12 content, the tools support visual exploration, modern browsers, tablet use and full keyboard operation.
The project in context
The publisher wanted learners to explore mathematical ideas within its existing digital content. Ficode developed and maintained 45 browser-based tools covering shapes, area and volume, measurement, geometry, number representations, diagrams and games. The tools sit within the publisher’s lessons.
Making mathematical concepts easier to explore within existing content
Static materials offered limited scope for exploring some mathematical concepts. The publisher needed interactive activities that fitted into its K–12 lessons, worked across modern browsers and tablets, and could be operated entirely by keyboard. The collection also needed ongoing maintenance.
The challenge Before
Static materials
Some mathematical concepts needed exploration beyond the existing static materials.Browser and tablet access
Activities needed to work in modern browsers, including tablet browsers.Keyboard operation
Learners needed to operate activities entirely through their keyboard controls. With Ficode Connected Approach
Embedded activities
Interactive mathematics tools are embedded directly within the publisher’s lessons.Browser compatibility
The tools support modern browsers, including iPad and tablet browsers.Accessible controls
Full keyboard operability was implemented across the interactive mathematics tools.Engineering the tools and maintaining the collection
Develop the interactive activities
Build tools that let learners explore mathematical ideas through visual representations and interactive activities.
Embed the tools within lessons
Integrate the activities into the publisher’s content so learners can use them within each lesson.
Support devices and keyboard controls
Implement modern browser and tablet support, WCAG 2.1 AA-level accessibility, and full keyboard operability.
Maintain the tool library
Provide ongoing maintenance for the collection of 45 interactive tools after the initial development work.
From the lesson to an activity and back
Read the lesson
Encounter a mathematical concept in the publisher’s content.Open the activity
Access an interactive tool embedded within the lesson.Explore and continue
Use the tool to explore a visual representation, then return to the surrounding content.CONNECTED OUTCOME
Learners encounter a mathematical concept in the publisher’s content, open an embedded tool and explore its visual representation. They then continue with the surrounding lesson.
A maintained library of interactive mathematics activities
45 tools delivered
The publisher gained 45 interactive mathematics tools developed and maintained by Ficode’s engineering team.
Activities within lessons
Learners can explore mathematical concepts through interactive activities embedded within the publisher’s existing lessons.
Modern browser support
The tools support modern browsers, including browsers on iPads and tablets used by learners.
Accessible interaction
WCAG 2.1 AA-level accessibility and full keyboard operability were implemented within the interactive tools.
The publisher gained 45 interactive tools embedded within its K–12 content. Ficode also maintained the tools after development.
