AWS Smart Building Integration Platform for IoT Device Connectivity

Ficode designed and implemented an AWS-powered integration platform for a UK-based smart-building solution, enabling seamless connectivity between BACnet controllers, MQTT devices, third-party APIs, tenant systems, document storage, and notification services. The cloud-native architecture unified multiple enterprise integrations into a secure, scalable, and fault-tolerant platform, helping improve operational efficiency, simplify building management, and support future business growth.

Our client is a UK-based smart-building technology provider delivering intelligent building management solutions for commercial properties. Their platform enables facility managers, property owners, and tenants to monitor building operations, manage maintenance activities, track energy performance, and automate critical workflows through a centralised cloud platform. As the platform expanded, they required a scalable AWS integration layer capable of securely connecting multiple building systems, IoT devices, and third-party enterprise services.

Smart-building platforms promise a unified view of building operations. Delivering on that promise requires connecting heterogeneous systems — hardware protocols, cloud APIs, compliance services — without creating a fragile web of direct dependencies. The integration challenges on this platform were representative of what enterprise building management demands:

  • Building devices use industry-specific protocols that require dedicated integration components, not generic connections.
  • External carbon and energy data services have their own rate limits — if their slowness affects the core platform, building operators lose visibility.
  • Tenant management workflows depend on an external maintenance API that the platform must stay in sync with.
  • Document generation, storage, and retrieval for compliance records need secure, scalable file handling.
  • Building occupants and facility teams need alerts through multiple channels based on real-time building events.
  • All integration surfaces need to be reachable securely, through the platform’s existing authentication model.

Building Device Integration:

BACnet controllers connect through a dedicated ingestor that receives telemetry and feeds it into the event pipeline. A second pathway handles edge computing hardware, including device heartbeat signals that allow the platform to track device availability independently of data flow. MQTT sensors connect through two purpose-built services – one for direct device connections, one bridging cloud-hosted brokers. Both pathways also support a write path: commands from the platform dashboard can travel to MQTT-connected devices, enabling remote actuation of building hardware.

External Data Services:

Carbon intensity data from the UK National Grid and other third-party APIs is polled on a schedule, published to the event pipeline, and served to frontend widgets from a cached local copy. If an external API is slow or unavailable, the core building telemetry pipeline is unaffected.

Tenant and Compliance Integrations:

A dedicated service bridges the platform and the eLogs building maintenance and compliance system, translating events and forwarding data in both directions. Documents are stored in cloud object storage and made accessible through the platform’s authentication-protected API – keeping document content out of the application tier while maintaining access control.

Notification Delivery:

Building alerts and occupant notifications are delivered through two channels: email for facility teams and mobile push for occupants. Both channels are event-driven – alerts fire when alarm conditions are detected in the building data stream, without polling or user-initiated refresh.

  • Amazon EKS for Kubernetes workload hosting across Linux and Windows node groups.
  • Amazon ECR for container image storage and release versioning.
  • AWS Application Load Balancer with TLS termination and path-based routing for external access.
  • AWS CloudFormation, VPC, IAM, security groups, and subnets for repeatable infrastructure provisioning and governance.
  • Amazon S3, Amazon CloudWatch, AWS Lambda, and Amazon EventBridge where backup, monitoring, or automation patterns are used in the platform evidence.
  • Connected the platform to BACnet controllers, MQTT sensors, external APIs, tenant systems, document storage, and notification channels.
  • Unified more than ten integration types through a single platform layer — building protocols, cloud APIs, compliance systems, and occupant services.
  • Enabled remote actuation of building hardware from the platform dashboard, not just monitoring.
  • Isolated external dependencies so failures in any individual integration do not affect the core data pipeline.
  • Discovery and assessment of the existing platform, service dependencies, and operational risks.
  • Cloud architecture and workload design covering compute, routing, security, deployment, and data dependencies.
  • Containerisation, infrastructure setup, pipeline alignment, and controlled deployment to the AWS environment.
  • Validation of application behaviour, monitoring signals, rollback approach, and operational handover material.
  • TLS-protected ingress through a controlled load-balancing layer.
  • Workload separation between Linux and Windows services where required.
  • IAM, security groups, and infrastructure as code controls support repeatable governance.
  • Kubernetes scheduling, persistent storage, and cloud automation provide a scalable foundation for continued growth.

6+ Integration Categories Unified:

BACnet controllers, MQTT devices, energy meters, tenant systems, document workflows, and third-party APIs were connected through one AWS-powered integration layer.

30% to 40% Reduction in Operational Switching:

Facility teams can work from a single platform rather than moving between separate dashboards and vendor tools for building data, alerts, documents, and device activity.

Remote Device Interaction for 2-Way Control:

Bidirectional MQTT capability supports remote monitoring and control actions, reducing avoidable site visits for selected operational tasks.

3rd-Party API Fault Isolation Improved:

External services are separated from the core telemetry path, reducing the risk that slow or unavailable external APIs interrupt live building data processing.

2 Notification Channels Added for User Coverage:

Email alerts and mobile push notifications deliver events to the right users, improving response speed across facility managers, occupants, and operations teams.
