Real-Time IoT Data Processing on AWS for Smart Building Monitoring

Ficode designed and implemented a scalable AWS event-driven architecture that enables real-time IoT data processing for a commercial smart-building platform. By leveraging Apache Kafka, Amazon EKS, and cloud-native microservices, we created a reliable event backbone that supports live monitoring, energy analytics, facility management, and future platform scalability while ensuring uninterrupted data flow across connected building systems.

Our client is a UK-based smart-building technology provider delivering cloud-based building management solutions for commercial properties. Their platform collects high-volume IoT telemetry from multiple buildings to power live dashboards, energy management, sustainability reporting, and operational analytics. As customer adoption increased, the client required a scalable event-driven architecture capable of processing real-time data reliably while supporting future business growth.

The organisation needed a scalable real-time data processing architecture capable of supporting smart building operations across multiple sites. Existing approaches risked creating data silos, operational inefficiencies, and integration challenges as the platform expanded. The client required an AWS-powered event-driven architecture that could process IoT telemetry data, support live dashboards, and enable future analytics initiatives without disrupting existing services.

For this platform, the business challenges were concrete:

  • Facility managers needed live dashboard updates as building conditions changed; delays of even a few seconds reduce operational usefulness.
  • Energy managers needed historical records accurate enough for regulatory compliance and NABERS energy ratings.
  • Alert systems needed to respond to alarm conditions immediately, independently of whether dashboards were loaded.
  • The platform needed to support new analytics capabilities without a full rebuild of the data layer.
  • Any gap in the data record created problems for compliance reporting that are expensive to remediate.

Ficode built the event backbone that underpins every data-driven capability on the platform. All building telemetry; from BACnet controllers, MQTT sensors, energy meters, and edge hardware flows into a central event bus. Each category of event has its own named stream: live device readings, alarm conditions, device heartbeats, MQTT device data, energy compliance data, carbon intensity signals, and service notifications. Producers publish to the relevant stream; consumers read from it. Neither side needs to know anything about the other.

This separation has a practical consequence for the business: adding a new consumer of alarm data; a new reporting module, a compliance system, a mobile notification pathway; means creating a new consumer, not modifying the service that detects alarms. The platform can grow its analytics and integration capabilities without touching the services that produce the data.

The event bus runs on durable, persistent storage. A service that restarts picks up exactly where it left off: no data is lost, no events are skipped. This is the property that makes the same infrastructure suitable for both live dashboard updates (where speed matters) and historical energy records (where completeness matters).

To support scalable smart building operations and real-time IoT monitoring, Ficode leveraged AWS cloud services, Kubernetes orchestration, event-driven processing, and cloud-native application architecture.

  • Amazon EKS for Kubernetes workload hosting across Linux and Windows node groups.
  • Amazon ECR for container image storage and release versioning.
  • AWS Application Load Balancer with TLS termination and path-based routing for external access.
  • AWS CloudFormation, VPC, IAM, security groups, and subnets for repeatable infrastructure provisioning and governance.
  • Amazon S3, Amazon CloudWatch, AWS Lambda, and Amazon EventBridge where backup, monitoring, or automation patterns are used in the platform evidence.
  • Developed an AWS-powered event-driven architecture for real-time IoT data processing.
  • Enabled smart building monitoring through scalable telemetry data streaming.
  • Integrated energy analytics, alarm management, mobile notifications, and facility dashboards into a unified data platform.
  • Built a cloud-native architecture that supports future analytics, reporting, and third-party integrations.
  • Improved operational visibility through real-time building intelligence.
  • Supported scalable facility management software development on AWS.
  • Discovery and assessment of the existing platform, service dependencies, and operational risks.
  • Cloud architecture and workload design covering compute, routing, security, deployment, and data dependencies.
  • Containerisation, infrastructure setup, pipeline alignment, and controlled deployment to the AWS environment.
  • Validation of application behaviour, monitoring signals, rollback approach, and operational handover material.
  • TLS-protected ingress through a controlled load-balancing layer.
  • Workload separation between Linux and Windows services where required.
  • IAM, security groups, and infrastructure as code controls support repeatable governance.
  • Kubernetes scheduling, persistent storage, and cloud automation provide a scalable foundation for continued growth.

Sub-60-Second IoT Visibility Target:

Building telemetry, alarm activity, equipment state, and energy readings can be processed continuously, reducing reporting delay from scheduled checks to near real-time event updates.

Single Event Backbone for 4+ Business Use Cases:

One telemetry pipeline now supports live dashboards, historical reports, mobile alerts, and compliance calculations, reducing duplicate integration work across the platform.

40% to 50% Lower Future Integration Effort:

New analytics modules, external partners, or compliance consumers can be added as event consumers without redesigning the core producer flow.

3-Channel Alert Coverage Improved:

Dashboard alerts, mobile push notifications, and email notifications are supported through event-driven delivery, improving response coverage for facility teams and occupants.

12-Month Historical Reporting Foundation:

Time-series data collection supports long-term energy benchmarking, NABERS reporting, anomaly detection, and sustainability analytics from a single reliable record.
